EVEREST REGION

The Everest region is eastern Nepal is the home of the Sherpas, the world’s most famous mountaineers your guide for this trek will be a local Sherpa from this very region. The Trekking Agents of Nepal certify the local Guides we employ Guides. They speak good have knowledge of the land and its culture, and have first aid training making them no less than some of the western leaders who lead trek regions.

The Tengboche Monastery, center of Sherpa Buddhist culture, holds pride of place in Himalayan
Eco-graphs. There is also the famous village of Namche Bazaar, a meeting place for Himalayan traders and yak caravans. The greatest prize of all is of course the view of Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

Our Everest experience e begins at Lukla airport (2,850). The trail follows the course of the Dudh Koshi River (the “river of milk”) as it charges down the narrow gorges. On the trail, you feel dwarfed by the mountains all around. Sacred stones, Chorten and pr4ayer flags mark the route. Yak caravans are frequently encountered and the precarious suspension bridges make you pause. You may not meet a yeti, but barking deer, must deer and the Himalayan tahr or mountain goat can be seen grazing on the steep slopes. The shaggy-coated yak is the most famous animal around here.

Namche Bazaar (3,446 m) is an enchanting settlement set in a horseshoe-shaped mountain amphitheater. Its Saturday market is a social event where merchandise of daily use, meat, yak tails and butter are traded. Mountaineering souvenirs left behind by expeditions to Everest can also be found in the shops of Namche.

Tengboche Monastery sits at altitudes of (3,870 m) in a clearing surrounded by first and rhododendrons. The view from here is a magnificent close-up of Everest (8.848), Nuptse (7,879 m), Lhotse (8,501 m), Ama Dablam, Kwangde and Thamserku. We will also be visiting the school in Khumjung village, which was built by Sir Edmund Hillary for the Sherpa children.

This trek not only offers breathtaking views of the mountain but also introduces you to the flora and found of the Himalayas. This route passes through forest of birches, conifers, and rhododendrons and above 4000 m. you will come across scrub, juniper, tundra and wildflowers. Also watch out for the blood pheasants and Nepal’s National bird Dhanfe, the Himalayan Monal or pheasant, snow pigeon and occasionally ravens. Near Gorakshep you are likely to see Tibetan snow cocks. High above you may see goshawks and golden eagles. You are also likely to see must deer early in the morning and just before dust.

The Pangboche gompa is the oldest in the Khumbu region and once had basted of having the skull and hand of a yeti. These items were stolen in 1991, leaving another chapter of the yeti legend unsolved.

At Pheriche a visit to the Trekkers aid post will be a knowledgeable and interesting one. During Trekking season there is a western physician present here. This establishment, and the doctors who operate it. Specialize in the study and treatment of altitude sickness.

An hour’s trek takes you to Dingboche, to aid your acclimatization process you have a rest day in Dingboche (which is less windy than Pheriche). Depending on how you feel you may wish to rest for the day and relax, or you may wish to do some exploring around and hike up the Imja Khola valley to Chhukung at 4730 m. The views from Chhukung at 4730 m. The view from Chhukung and further up the valley on the moraines towards Island Peak (6189 m) are tremendous. The great south face of Lhotse towers above to the north, while Amphu Lapcha a (5780 m pass) and the immense fluted ice walls that flank it dominate the horizon to the south. To the southwest, the eastern face, of Amadablam provides an unusual view of this picturesque peak.

From Phalang Karpo at 4340 m. (en route Dingboche to Lobuje) the views of Twachee and Cholatse (6440 m) are spectacular. On this day you will be passing through country reported to be the habitat of the snow leopard and yeti.

On this trek you will also come across stone monuments in memory of those who died during various expedition to Everest since 1970.

The trek from Lobuje to Gorakshep (5160 m.) is a short one arriving at Gorakshep before lunchtime. The highlight of this day is the view of conical peak of Pumori and a close-up view of Mt. Everest from Kala Pattar Peak meaning “black rock”, which is 5545 m. high. You have an option of having lunch at Gorakshep and then climbing Kalapattar or taking a packed lunch to Kalapattar and eating you lunch wile enjoying the view. From Kalapattar or taking a packed lunch to Kalapattar and eating your lunch while enjoying the view. From Kalapattar you will be descending back to Gorakshep which was the base camp for the 1952 Swiss Everest Expedition.

The climb to Kalapattar is a steep ascent but form there the entire Everest south face is visible as well as the Lho La (the pass between Nepal and Tibet, changtse(the northern peak o Everest) and most of the West Ridge route. As you near the top of Kalapattar, more of the peak of Everest itself comes into view, and from the summit of Kalapattar on the ridge towards Pumori will allow a view all the way to the South Col.

Some may experience sleepless night and discomfort at Gorakshep if this is the case you will have to descend to Lobuje the next day. For those who are fine and have no problem you can further explore towards the Base Camp. The walk to base camp from Gorakshep is about as six-hour return trip. The route follows the Khumbu glacier, sometimes on the moraine and sometimes on the glacier itself. The trip to base camp, while fascinating, is not as spectacular as the ascent of Kalapattar because there is not view of Everest itself from base camp. The highlight of going to Base Camp is that you can come across Expedition going to Everest and get a first hand insight as t what happens Expedition of Everest.

By now you will be very familiar with the different mountains and so on your way down you will be trying to identify the mountains, which is not a very difficult task. On your way back to Kathmandu you can buy Tibetan art, craft & jewelry from the Tibetan Merchants at Namche.
